9.79 / THE FALLEN STAR
- Christof Gertsc, Mikael Krogerus / Das Magazin, Tamedia
When Ben Johnson won over Carl Lewis in Seoul 1988 in spectacular 9.79 seconds, Mikael Krogerus and Christof Gertsch were 11 and 7 years old respectively. They did not know that they had just witnessed a race that would permanently alter the perception of athletic perfomances. They, as many, had never thought about drugs in sports before. 30 years later they revisit the infamous 100 meters race and its aftermath in order to find out: What happened, and why? Who pulled the strings, and how? Why was Ben Johnson flagged publicly while everyone else got away with it? And most of all: What if what we expect from our athletes is not possible to achieve without the help of drugs?
