MARCO TRUNGELLITI, THE ARGENTINE WHO CHALLENGED THE MAFIA THAT FIXES MATCHES
- Sebastian Ignacio Torok / Diario La Nacion de Argentina
Argentine tennis player Marco Trungelliti uncovered, on February 10, 2019, in the newspaper La Nacion of Buenos Aires, a pressure cooker linked to match-fixing and betting in the racket sport. In 2015, he turned down an approach from match-fixers and reported to the Tennis Integrity Unit (TIU). Trungelliti was the only one brave enough to talk in detail about an infection that makes tennis sick, even after suffering great harassment by some players, who were sanctioned. His case achieved global significance. The most important international news media echoed the publication of La Nacion and many of them decided to interview the Argentine. A legend of the sport, John McEnroe dedicated a section of his TV show on Eurosport to vigorously defend Trungelliti. The TIU has reported that in 2019, after Trungelliti's complaint, alerts about possible match-fixing fell by 48% compared to 2018.
