“The Ticket - Black Lives Matter and Athletes' Right to Protest” by Tracey Holmes (Australia) claimed the top prize at the AIPS Sport Media Awards 2020. Against the backdrop of massive protests for
social justice across the US, Holmes focuses on how sports bodies are
pressured into embracing activism while the International Olympic
Committee (IOC) continues to insist on its anti-protest rule. In the
podcast, IOC vice president, Anita De Frantz explains why she was one of
those who took to the streets in a show of force for the Black Lives
Matter campaign amid rising Covid-19 cases in the USA, her friendship
with Tommie Smith and John Carlos who are remembered for their Black
Power Salute at the 1968 Mexico City Games, and why she supports
protests being banned under the Olympic Charter's Rule 50. The programme
also features IOC President Thomas Bach and the CEO of the Commonwealth
Games Federation that has given approval for athletes to 'take a knee'
should they wish on the Commonwealth Games podium. The Ticket is a
weekly on-air programme and international podcast that dives into the
issues of sport, the shades of grey and complexities of running sport,
and the impact governing bodies decisions have on athletes and other
stakeholders.
